“Just wrapped up an incredible week as part of the Clyde & Co Spring Vacation Scheme. I had the opportunity to experience first-hand how collaborative, international and genuinely supportive the firm is on a day-to-day basis.

What stood out most to me was the people. Everyone I met was approachable, generous with their time, and genuinely invested in ensuring we got the most out of the experience. I very quickly felt part of the team, which made a real difference over such a short period.

I was particularly struck by the firm’s cross-border nature. As a French speaker, I really enjoyed the opportunity to engage with the Paris team and see how naturally work flows across jurisdictions. It brought to life what it means to be part of a truly global firm.

A huge thank you to my EMNR B team for their support and for making the week such a memorable experience and to the Early Careers team for organising such a well-structured and engaging programme.”

“Joining Clyde & Co. has been a fantastic first step into the corporate world after my teaching career. I began as an L&T Coordinator in the London office supporting the UKE region, which gave me a strong grounding in the firm’s learning and talent processes.

Since moving into the GBS team in December 2024, my role has expanded significantly. I initially supported MEA, but the global structure of GBS has allowed me to work across APAC, MEA, NA, and UKE: streamlining processes, improving consistency, and contributing to more efficient ways of working worldwide.

My teaching background has been a real asset. Progressing into the Senior Coordinator role has given me the chance to train, support, and upskill colleagues, blending my passion for education with my growing experience in global HR operations.

“Hi, I’m Ada Wittenberger, Senior Counsel at Clyde & Co. I joined the firm’s Montréal office in 2015 with three years of general commercial litigation experience, a great deal of enthusiasm, and just as much to learn. Over the past decade, I discovered the world of E&O, D&O, and specialty insurance litigation, and haven’t looked back since.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide array of complex litigation and multi-jurisdictional arbitration matters, often collaborating with colleagues across our global offices. My day-to-day practice involves defending insured professionals and advising insurers on litigation strategy, risk exposure, and alternate dispute resolution options.

I’ve also been involved in large catastrophic loss and political risk insurance matters, representing insurers and reinsurers and working alongside experts from many different industries—everything from forensic accounting to wildfire analysis, oil and gas, mining, and engineering. There has rarely been a dull moment over the past decade, and I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at Clyde & Co.

Outside my practice, I’m actively involved in the legal community. I currently sit on the board of directors of the Barreau du Québec, where I contribute to its governance and public protection mission. I also teach at a biannual litigation seminar for practicing lawyers who want to sharpen their courtroom skills.

If I hadn’t gone into law, I likely would have pursued sports medicine. I spent much of my late teens and early adulthood practicing martial arts and teaching group fitness and aerobics classes. Although I ultimately chose law school, I still aim to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You’ll usually find me at a workout, in a hot Pilates class, or squeezing in a quick run, these small habits contribute to making me a happier litigator.

When I’m not working, I’m spending time with my amazing four-year-old daughter, who is already mastering the art of negotiating and persuading, both on her own and alongside my partner’s son of the same age. Seeing the world through her eyes over the past few years has been the greatest joy of my life. Family is everything to me.”

"Hello, I’m Daniel M. Pammer and I am a senior counsel working out of the Chicago office. Before earning my titles and obtaining my license to practice, it was my journey into law that cemented my passion for the legal system.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, I worked as a law clerk throughout college and undergraduate school to determine if this field was right for me. During my clerkship, I had several mentors that would bring me on trial—from New York to Washington state—to assist with daily tasks and help strategize. While attending these trials, I became immensely interested in the legal system and how cases were argued from both perspectives. With these experiences, I knew the legal field was right for me.

I joined Clyde & Co in January 2019 and hold licensure in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, New York, and Wyoming. I primarily handle defense and monitoring work for insured and self-insured clients involved in complex casualty, premises liability, product liability, and transportation matters throughout the country.

Since joining Clyde & Co in January 2019, I have seen incredible growth, not just within the firm, but in my own career as well. Our firm has provided the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients domestically and internationally in a plethora of matters. Most people think working for a large law firm is daunting, but here I truly feel at home. With the cohesive effort amongst offices, colleagues who are always willing to help, and truly incredible staff, Clyde & Co is the right fit for me.

In 2024, I was nominated to take part in our firm’s Next Generation London Market Initiative, which has provided me an opportunity to visit the London market and meet with our closest clients to strengthen relationships while building my own book. This program and the firm have entrusted me to provide trainings and meet with hundreds of clients that work with our firm from around the world. One of the events I most look forward to is our annual US Litigation School and Mock Trial, where we provide a peak into how cases are handled in the US for an audience of international clients.

Outside of work, my wife and I enjoy spending time with our kids and dog, along with traveling. Whether it’s floor hockey, ice hockey, flag football or dance, we love to spend time with our kids doing the things they love. Being part of Clyde & Co has allowed me to be actively involved in my children’s school and activities, due in large part to the flexibility and trust I have experienced.

As a tip to any aspiring or young attorney, try your best to build long-lasting relationships on both sides of the aisle, it will take you much further."

“Hi, I’m Gemma Parker, a partner in Clyde & Co’s Catastrophic Injury and Large Loss team in Southampton, UK. I handle a varied caseload of catastrophic and multi-track personal injury claims, often involving complex liability issues and serious, life changing injuries.

I didn’t start out aiming for a career in law. I studied accounting and economics before discovering a real interest in legal work. I’d always enjoyed maths at school, so I went to university to study accounting and economics with the intention of becoming an accountant.

During my degree, I took a law for accountants’ module — and that completely changed my direction. I found the legal side genuinely fascinating, so after graduating I went on to complete the Graduate Diploma in Law and decided to qualify as a solicitor instead.

I first discovered personal injury during my training contract and immediately enjoyed the pace, variety and problem-solving involved. The mix of detailed investigations, complex quantum issues and meaningful work with clients continues to motivate me.

One memorable case involved a claimant alleging injury while lifting a box from height. Through thorough liability and causation investigations, including witness evidence and her medical and DWP records, we established a significant pre existing history. We denied liability, stood firm, and the claimant eventually discontinued at trial and agreed to contribute to our client’s costs - a strong outcome and a reminder of the value of detailed evidence gathering.

Curiosity and analytical thinking underpin how I work. I like getting into the detail, understanding how everything fits together, and giving clear, confident advice. Being personable and communicating well also helps build trust and makes teamwork easier, something I really value.

The market is increasingly shifting towards more complex, higher value injury work, which genuinely interests me and plays to my strengths. What I enjoy most at Clyde & Co, though, is the people - talented, supportive and fun to work with. The mix of great colleagues, lovely clients, and challenging work makes it a brilliant place to build a career.

Outside of work, one of my favourite things to do is go to the theatre. I love both plays and musicals, and it’s something I really enjoy sharing with my children and the rest of my family. The last show we saw was Peter Pan, a panto at the Mayflower Theatre, which was brilliant and full of energy.

My favourite play so far has been Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the staging and effects were incredible, and the way they brought the magic to life was amazing. My favourite musical is Blood Brothers, the story may be sad, but the songs are wonderful.”

“I’m Kirsten Soto and I’m a Senior Counsel working out of Clyde & Co’s Los Angeles and Dallas offices. My practice focuses on advising and representing primary and excess insurers in complex insurance coverage and bad faith disputes. Because I am licensed in multiple jurisdictions (specifically, California, Texas, Virginia, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia), my practice includes monitoring and litigating cases across the United States.

My work includes advising insurers on claims handling and management of emerging risks associated with gig economy businesses, including short-term home rental companies, rideshare providers, and automated vehicle operators. I also present on evolving insurance coverage issues related to social media addiction and claims arising from the increasing use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

I enjoy working at Clyde & Co because it is a place that values collaboration. In my four years with the firm, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with fellow Clyde & Co attorneys in our London, Toronto, Montréal, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Miami offices. Working in a law firm that encourages coordinated efforts across offices and teams allows me and my colleagues to ensure our clients can obtain efficient and practical resolutions to disputes.

Outside of work, I enjoy taking my three dogs on walks, going horseback riding, and hiking. I’ve organized several group outings for my Clyde & Co colleagues, giving us the chance to explore fun destinations together and connect outside of the office.

When I’m not exploring the outdoors, you’ll find me training at my local boxing gym. In addition to training one-on-one with coaches, I’ve also done some sparring with fellow fighters at the gym. Boxing has taught me that careful preparation, and remaining calm when confronted with chaos, is the best strategy against any opponent.”

“Hi, I’m Marc Penman, a Senior Associate within Clyde & Co’s energy, marine, and natural resources practice based in Abu Dhabi. My work focuses on providing non-contentious, transactional advice to upstream and service sector oil and gas clients operating across the MENA region and beyond.

While I concentrate primarily on EPC and “turnkey” contracting models for complex onshore and offshore construction projects, my role also spans a broad suite of corporate, commercial, contractual and strategic matters. No two days look the same, and that’s one of the most rewarding aspects of the work. It’s an incredibly exciting time for this practice area, especially here in the MENA region. As society navigates the balance between climate transition goals and the need for continued energy security, responsible and sustainable investment in oil and gas projects is becoming more critical than ever. Innovation across the industry is driving efforts to decarbonise infrastructure and progress toward net zero goals.

The UAE is leading the way, positioning itself at the forefront of transformation within the sector. Being able to advise clients in this space means contributing to a much bigger picture, something that motivates me daily.

I joined the Abu Dhabi office just over seven months ago, though it already feels much longer thanks to the vibrancy and collaboration that runs through the office and the firm as a whole. It’s energising to be part of a team that genuinely wants its people to become the best version of themselves and continually grow.

My career path wasn’t always linear. Aside from dreams of becoming a professional footballer (still holding onto that one…), I never had a single “preferred” choice. There truly is no one path into law. Some find their direction early on; others discover it after a more winding journey. For me, taking a two year break from university to chase the football dream in the US made both the journey and the destination meaningful.

Outside of work, my weekends are dictated by my daughter, and thankfully, Abu Dhabi offers no shortage of family friendly options. From museums and theme parks to days at the pool or the beach, it’s an incredible place to raise a young family.”

Jason Balsamo is a Senior Counsel based in our New York office. Today, he is sharing his story.

“Hi everyone, I’m Jason Balsamo and I am a Senior Counsel in Clyde & Co’s New York office. I joined the firm as an Associate in 2019 in our Financial Institutions (FI) and Directors & Officers (D&O) group looking for challenging work and an opportunity to grow. The COVID-19 pandemic happened shortly after I joined our firm and led me to work on many interesting private and not-for-profit D&O matters. I was able to work with a team of brilliant attorneys and learned a lot in a short period of time. My colleagues were always available to talk through complicated issues and quickly made me feel like part of a real team. These colleagues—and our firm's resources and professional development programs—quickly allowed me to elevate my legal skills.

Today my practice includes handling coverage litigation and providing coverage advice on FI and D&O risks, as well as with respect to Employment Practices Liability (EPL) and transactional risks. In addition to handling complex coverage litigation, my practice includes providing pre-litigation coverage advice and counseling while also monitoring high-profile cases to help insurers resolve disputes at an early stage, before those risks become more significant, and helping our clients avoid potential bad faith exposure.

I became an attorney to solve problems, and my favorite part of my practice is investigating a new file and putting the pieces of a puzzle together. The moment when those pieces begin to fit together never gets old. This was particularly true on one coverage case I was involved in with a long history of related prior litigation. I was able to spend the better part of a month digging into court filings, motions, declarations, and claim files to get a clearer picture of the case and, in so doing, was able to identify numerous jurisdictional and substantive defenses by looking at the case with a different perspective. This work allowed us to obtain a favorable settlement for our client in just a few short months for less than a tenth of the plaintiff’s initial settlement demand.

Outside of work, you can often find me going to a NY Mets game at Citi Field. I share Mets season tickets with one of my colleagues at Clyde and I arrange our New York office’s annual Mets game for our Summer Associate Program. I’ve also attended a Mets game at London Stadium last year with one of our UK colleagues; my relationships with international colleagues are one of my favorite parts of working at Clyde. When I’m not at a Mets game, my wife and I spend a lot of time out on Long Island’s North Fork, where we love to do wine tastings and spend time with our Boston Terrier, Rex. (Although, to be fair, we sometimes take Rex to see a Mets game, too!)”

“My name is Melissa Gardner and I'm a Partner in Clyde & Co's Chicago and Phoenix offices and a member of our firm's Trial & Defense practice group. I also serve as national trial counsel for my clients.

I specialized in this practice because I've always been drawn to the art and challenge of trial work, and after trying my first case, I was completely hooked. It takes a unique combination of grit, creative strategy, and courtroom presence to deliver the results our clients deserve—qualities that make this work both challenging and deeply rewarding.

I’m thrilled to be part of Clyde & Co’s national trial practice and to contribute to its tremendous growth across the United States. The momentum behind our firm's emergence as a powerhouse and go-to legal team for trial work is truly exciting, and it’s inspiring to collaborate with such talented and driven colleagues who share that vision.

I am reminded of this incredible collaboration through work on a recent matter in which my team parachuted into an admitted liability traumatic brain injury (TBI) case a few months before trial was set to begin. We navigated complex challenges, helped our client understand the risks they faced, and developed a plan to reduce those risks at trial. The plaintiff alleged a wide range of injuries, including TBI, post-concussive syndrome, PTSD, anxiety, depression, spinal injuries, hormonal deficiencies, and other complications requiring future surgery. He claimed permanent disability, ongoing pain and suffering, and presented a life care plan totaling approximately USD 6.7 million—asking the jury for USD 30 million in damages. After extensive (last-minute) preparation and strategic trial work, we secured a complete defense verdict.

While I continue my practice of delivering outstanding results for clients, I am also a proud mom to two girls—Kennedy and Cameron—who were 4 years and 2 months old, respectively, at the time our family photos shared below were taken this summer. Currently, our weekends are filled with ballet, tap, sports, and all sorts of kid activities. I’m also savoring the last of the newborn snuggles with Cami and watching Kennedy step into her new role as a big sister. Outside of family time, I’m a self-proclaimed foodie who loves exploring new restaurants and culinary experiences with my husband, Jason, and our friends.”

“I am an international M&A lawyer based between Abu Dhabi and Dubai (and the world...I travel quite a lot!), usually somewhere between a closing call and a boarding gate. My work cuts across every sector - healthcare, energy, tech, logistics, industrial and manufacturing, infrastructure, you name it - although I am quite well known for my obsession with W&I and insurance sector M&A regional, cross-border and global.

I became a lawyer because I genuinely believe in fairness and justice and have never been shy to speak up, for myself or defend others — and, truth be told, growing up in a family full of strong personalities, I learned to argue my case early! Over time, I fell in love with the boardroom side of law — how deals shape economies, industries, and even future and relationships between countries.

If I had to sum up what it takes to survive (and enjoy) M&A: strategy, curiosity, EQ (yes to emotional intelligence and intuition... no to ego, that can be left at home), and tons of patience. I live on adrenaline and love a good challenge and high pace.

Outside of work, I am all about art, music, theatre, stand-up comedy, movies, and gatherings with friends. I like nice, funny, straightforward people — and luckily married one, Francesco, the best part of the apple.

At the end of the day, I believe consistency and integrity matter most — in deals, in friendships, and in life (ideally with good humor and decent pizza). My mottos are: Never stop searching for purpose, follow your dreams, and always support nice people as they make the world a better place.”

Kelly Brotherhood is a Senior Associate in our Glasgow office. For this year's Dyslexia Awareness Week, she shares with you her experience.

"I was around 11 when the word dyslexia was officially attached to me. By that point, the signs had been there for years. At four, I started at a state primary school and was quickly placed in the remedial class. I was also sent for elocution lessons, not because I had trouble forming words, but because I had a broad country accent that apparently needed ironing out.

By eight, my parents moved me to a private all-girls Catholic school. Imagine Harry Potter, swap wands for hymn books, and you’ve got the picture: kilts, cloaks, straw boater hats. Here it became obvious my reading lagged at least a year behind my classmates. But the school was different - small classes of around ten girls meant my teachers had time to notice and nurture. I made huge leaps forward.

When I moved on to senior school, the diagnosis came: dyslexia. This was 1990, though, and dyslexia wasn’t yet seen as “neurodivergence” or “a different way of learning.” It was seen as stupidity. The diagnosis wasn’t a relief. It was a label of shame, something I hid for decades.

I never told anyone at university that I was dyslexic. I studied Biomedical Sciences, graduated with a BSc (Hons), and did it all without asking for extra time, software, or adjustments. To admit dyslexia was, in my mind, to admit I wasn’t clever enough. That I shouldn’t have been there. Dyslexia meant you were thick.

After graduating, I studied law: the accelerated LLB part-time, followed by the Diploma in Legal Practice, finishing in 2009 before starting my traineeship at HBM Sayers. During my diploma, there was another student who was openly dyslexic. She talked about it without shame, and she showed me how the world’s view of dyslexia had shifted. For her, it was a badge, not a burden. She’s now an advocate.

I wasn’t there yet. I masked instead. I built systems and routines so no one would guess. I surrounded myself with people who supported me and kept going. I used “blonde” humour to protect myself. It wasn’t until the end of my traineeship that I began to be more open. The Law Society of Scotland then asked me to write an article about my dyslexia for their campaign on diversity in law. And just like that - there it was, out in the open.

Even now, with two degrees under my belt, and a diploma in forensic psychology, there are moments where a small voice tells me dyslexia means I’m stupid. That’s the old conditioning. It was hammered into us in the 90s that struggling with words meant struggling with intelligence. Thankfully, society is shifting. Dyslexia today is framed differently: as a difference, not a deficit. And I’m glad to see younger people growing up in a world where neurodivergence is celebrated.

In fact, right now I’m applying for higher rights of audience as a solicitor-advocate. That’s the qualification that allows solicitors to appear in the highest courts in Scotland and the Supreme Court in London. It’s not a path open to anyone who is “stupid” - it takes skill, determination and a sharp legal mind. The very fact I’m here, applying for this, is proof that the label I once hid from is not a measure of my ability.

And if I need a reminder, I think of Elle Woods’ (she is, after all, the reason I studied law!) graduation speech from Legally Blonde: “It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world, remembering that first impressions are not always correct. You must always have faith in people. And most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself.”

I’ve also come to see dyslexia as a strength. My work in fraud depends on spotting patterns, thinking laterally, and making connections others might miss. That’s the way my brain works naturally - it’s not a flaw, it’s an asset.

The shame I carried as a child has also given me a purpose. I don’t want anyone else to feel held back by a label or made to think their brain makes them “less than.” If anything, dyslexia has sharpened my determination and made me more resilient.

So yes, I’m dyslexic. And no, it doesn’t make me stupid. It makes me different. It makes me good at what I do. It makes me me."

Danielle Darke is a Recruitment Manager in our London office. For this year's Dyslexia Awareness Week, she shares with you her experience.

"I was diagnosed with dyslexia in my last year of primary school. I often find that it becomes worse under pressure and have vivid memories of my English teacher making me read to the class aloud and then subsequently re-read the paragraphs he asked me to read after he realised that I had subconsciously re-written some of the sentences… although I would then often debate how my version sounded much better…

It’s a constant battle of skipping ahead when reading and proof-reading my emails to ensure they actually make sense. There are always particular words that I get muddled or stuck with, one being associate which is quite unfortunate for my job role! My brain also tends to run at 100 miles per hour and I have often had friends and close family tell me that they cannot keep up with my brain when it’s having a moment.

That being said and after building some confidence I have never been ashamed or let my dyslexia hold me back. The highest grades I achieved during my GCSEs were English Literature and Language, as despite the occasional need to decrypt my text messages and email correspondence, I actually really enjoyed creative writing and one of my favourite things to do when I get half an hour of down time is crosswords. This seems ironic and challenging for someone with a brain like mine.

The main way I manage the dyslexia in my daily life and at work is through practice, creating lists and using the tools I have available such as spell check and Co-Pilot. I am also super grateful to colleagues and management who allow me to feel comfortable enough to cross check and proof read any correspondence of great significance. And unsurprisingly, my preferred communication style is verbal which is fortunate as a recruiter.

My defining moment with dyslexia was when a learning support member of staff at my school placed a wooden alphabet in front of me at 14. I don’t think this had the desired effect she was looking as it incited immediate feelings of anger and frustration. However i will forever be grateful for that moment as it gave me the confidence to go and prove just how little she had understood me. You are not stupid or incapable, neither do you lack attention to detail. It just means your brain works differently and you need take the time to understand how and what works best for you.

My advice to others, whilst easier said than done, is not to feel shame or lack of confidence around your abilities. Albert Einstein said 'if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will spend its whole life thinking it is stupid'. Albert Einstein also showed symptoms of dyslexia in his work.

It is great to work in a supportive firm and environment in which I can be myself, without judgment or stigma."

“Last week, I had the privilege of joining Clyde & Co's LIFT Insight Programme at their London branch - An incredible experience that has truly deepened my understanding of the legal sector and opened my eyes to the pathways available to aspiring legal professionals.

The programme comprised:

Sessions with Aviation, Corporate and Catastrophic Injury

Mock Interview experience

Professional development masterclass (CV & Linkedln)

Medical Negligence, Case study presentation

A key highlight was the mock interview process, where I was interviewed by the brilliant Annabelle Woghiren. Despite having had continuous success in previous legal interviews, I was met with a humbling realisation: growth never stops. I received both constructive criticisms and meaningful praise — each piece of feedback gave me something to reflect on. The session showed me that even established strengths deserve fine-tuning, and that there’s always room to elevate my skills.

I left feeling not discouraged, but energised. Motivated to refine my approach, ask better questions of myself, and continue developing the qualities that will shape me into a capable, thoughtful legal professional.

A special thank you to Annabelle Woghiren for your thoughtful interview and the invaluable advice you shared - your insights have genuinely helped and will continue to help me strengthen my approach and boost my confidence going forward.

A heartfelt thank you to Clyde & Co for creating a programme that actively tackles inequalities in the legal sector.
“The Clerkship was a formative experience that offered invaluable insight into the inner workings of an international corporate firm and significantly enhanced my commercial awareness. Through my rotations, I was exposed to a variety of key industries, deepening my understanding not only through the work I was entrusted with but also through daily interactions with intelligent and diverse professionals. Their perspectives enriched my learning and made the experience all the more rewarding.

One of my greatest takeaways from the Clerkship was the opportunity to experience a variety of legal practice areas. This exposure not only deepened my legal knowledge but also helped me better understand where my interests lie and how different teams collaborate to deliver client outcomes.

What originally drew you to Clyde & Co for your summer experience, and what made you want to return full-time?

Clyde & Co’s global presence and reputation for handling complex disputes stood out. The people made me want to return full-time—the mix of deep expertise and friendly mentorship make it an ideal firm for a starting associate to thrive.

How did your relationships with lawyers during summer – mentors, partners, or peer – impact your decision to return?

Every conversation, whether with a partner or associate, felt fun and welcoming. The willingness to teach and share industry insights made an impression.

Can you share a memorable moment or project from your summer that helped shape your interest in a specific practice area or solidified your career path?

Attending a live deposition was a highlight. Seeing skilled attorneys think on their feet showed me how dynamic litigation work really is, and also how intriguing shipping industry cases can be.

What was the most rewarding or unexpected part of your summer experience at Clyde & Co?

How much trust and responsibility summer associates were given right away. I expected observation but got substantive work helping research case law for motions, drafting client letters, and preparing for depositions.

How did the summer program prepare you for your transition into practice as a first-year associate?

The summer program gave me a realistic, hands-on look at day-to-day firm practice. From charting the facts of a new, complex matter, to drafting under pressure, every task was preparation for adding value as a junior team member.

How has Clyde & Co supported your growth since joining—whether through mentorship, learning opportunities, or career progression?

Clyde & Co offers a nice balance of hands-on experience and structured learning. Alongside mentorship with associates and extensive interaction with partners, the firm provides educational sessions that focus on key areas of law, helping the entire North America summer associate cohort grow together.

What would you tell a law student considering a summer at Clyde & Co?

Say yes. You will learn by doing and be part of a team that treats you like a future colleague, not a summer intern. And the cases are fascinating too!

I wanted to work for a firm with a global reach because it provides diverse ideas on leadership and solutions to legal challenges.
How did your relationships with lawyers during summer – mentors, partners, or peer – impact your decision to return?

How did the summer program prepare you for your transition into practice as a first-year associate?

How has Clyde & Co supported your growth since joining—whether through mentorship, learning opportunities, or career progression?

Josh Halliday joined us through our Summer Associate Program (2023), and is now an Associate. Today, he tells us about his experience.

What originally drew you to Clyde & Co for your summer experience, and what made you want to return full-time?

I had heard great things about the people and culture at Clyde & Co. Even the first emails to set up my interview were friendly and engaging! After spending an enjoyable summer at Clyde & Co it was obvious that what I had heard was true. Everyone at the firm was welcoming, supportive, and invested in my learning. Even as a summer associate, I got significant face time with the partners and felt a part of the team.

How did your relationships with lawyers during summer – mentors, partners, or peer – impact your decision to return?

I had worked in other firms prior to Clyde & Co where I did not have the opportunity to work with partners and senior staff very closely. It was refreshing to get to learn and work alongside partners, associates, paralegals and support on a variety of projects. All the staff are down to earth and approachable which made for an easy transition into the team.

Can you share a memorable moment or project from your summer that helped shape your interest in a specific practice area or solidified your career path?

I was hoping to get more experience with litigation throughout the summer. I was lucky enough to attend multiple hearings, depositions, and mediations which solidified my interest in this area.

What was the most rewarding or unexpected part of your summer experience at Clyde & Co?

I came in as a summer associate with minimal experience with insurance law. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learnt about insurance law over the summer as well as how my interest and passion in the area grew. The most rewarding part was of course being given the opportunity to return full time after graduation.

How did the summer program prepare you for your transition into practice as a first-year associate?

Through my time over the summer, I developed strong relationships with multiple partners and associates which I have been able to build on throughout my time as an attorney. Of course, I also gained practical knowledge through learning about the insurance industry and work product expectations at the firm.

How has Clyde & Co supported your growth since joining—whether through mentorship, learning opportunities, or career progression?

Clyde & Co is deeply invested in Associate development. From the start, my mentor Jimmy Moffitt has been supportive, knowledgeable, and accessible whether I need help with a case or want to share my success. I have also been fortunate to work on multiple cases with different teams - learning from multiple well respected attorneys has been invaluable in my first year out of law school.

What do you enjoy most about working at Clyde & Co today?

I enjoy the collaborative environment at Clyde & Co. As a new associate, getting real time feedback and recognition from more experienced lawyers has been helpful for my development. The firm is understanding of a work/life balance which contributes to the positive culture overall.

What would you tell a law student considering a summer at Clyde & Co?

Apply! I would highly recommend the experience! Even if someone is unsure about insurance law, Clyde & Co is a great firm and a great place to learn.

"My career to become a lawyer began 8,000 miles east in Kuwait City, Kuwait, where I was born. My parents immigrated to the United States in 1993 following Operation Desert Storm. I grew up in the area of Riverside, California, where my mother and my two brothers still live today. My parents championed a career in law and I was the first to graduate from college and graduate school in my family. Despite my parents’ persuasion, I know I chose the best career for myself.

Fast forward to today where my team at Clyde & Co defends private and public entities in a wide variety of cases, including catastrophic injury cases, motor vehicle accident, employment dispute, sex abuse, product liability, and commercial disputes. They also handle class action work.

Though my experience mostly involves labor and employment defense matters, I am attempting to expand that area of practice at the firm. Since I’m located in San Diego, I am expanding the litigation work the firm offers in that region.

I am proud to mentor, lead, and oversee an experienced team of litigators who are predominately women. I am also passionate about helping others succeed, promoting diversity and maintaining a positive working environment. Happiness at work has a profound impact on productivity, creativity, commitment and collegiality. I believe that working as one is what helps us secure the best and most successful results for our clients.

Hear from Sana Medileh who is an Early Careers and Employer Brand Advisor at Clyde & Co. She has extensive graduate recruitment and teaching experience. Read on to learn from her 5 Minute Guide to be Exam Ready.

No matter how long you’ve been in education for, exam season remains a nerve-wracking period. The high stakes of achieving the grades that will open the doors to good graduate programmes, are enough to make anyone’s head spin. Thankfully, with a bit of preparation, going through the season becomes entirely manageable and (almost) stress free.

This article will guide you through the steps to academic success by focusing on two key areas: achieving year-round consistency and time-management.

Achieving year-round consistency

Believe it or not, learning does not start while nervously deciphering the notes you scribbled in class four weeks ago. The key to success in academia is consistency. Information learnt at a slower pace and revised often will stick in your mind longer. From note taking to revision timetables, we will cover all you need to be ready for your exam day.

Step 1: Active learning

It might go without saying but learning is an active experience that starts while you are in class. The more engaged you are with your course, the easier it will be for you to memorize its content.

While listening in class, try to connect what you hear with knowledge you’ve gathered in other modules or previous years, for example. Take any offered opportunity to answer questions, present your homework, or to engage more broadly during the lesson (ask yourself: why is the course organized this way rather than another? What choice of material is being used?). Go further than just knowing the right from the wrong answer, but rather, why is one right and the other wrong. Have a look at the bibliography of your classes and check out the source material.

You can also discuss the content of the class with classmates to check your understanding of your lessons or assignments. Fostering a collaborative work environment with your classmates will be beneficial for everyone involved.

In other words, be curious and interested in what you are learning. By taking this approach, you will improve both your level of confidence in your abilities and your critical thinking skills.

Step 2: Note taking

Taking notes during class is an essential step but you can do more.

While in class, because you try to keep pace with your lecturer, you might find yourself skipping to write a lot of details. Consequently, some bits of information that you write, and that make sense while in class, can become obscured while reviewing your notes a few days later. To help with this, you should aim to rewrite them as rapidly as possible – ideally within the same day you took your class – to make sure they are comprehensive enough when it is time to revise. More than just adding detailed information and explanations to your notes, take this opportunity to make the information clearer and structured.

To restructure your notes, you can add colours, highlight, or underline. It is also good to add structure with titles, and subtitles. As you add more content to your notes, you can also do the opposite : solely write down the essentials on flash cards.

Flash cards are your best friends. We advise that you use one card colour per subject to help your memory make the right associations.

Once you will have showed curiosity in class, took sufficient notes, re-read and arranged them, what you will need is a plan on how to organize your study time.

Time Management

By organizing and prioritizing tasks, students can maximize their productivity, reduce stress, and ensure a balanced approach to their studies. Time management will also be a key part of your professional success, so it is paramount you learn strategies at the earliest opportunity. In this section, we will cover revision timetabling and how to beat revision fatigue. Here we will broach revision schedules and how to make the best use of past papers.

Step 1: Revision Schedule

Following a revision schedule is not only great to prepare for exams but it is also good practice for your future career. Time is a precious resource that you will want to manage successfully to both juggle all your commitments and to take time for yourself to replenish your energy levels.

In this respect, a calendar will be your best friend to map out your time. To start easily, log all your commitments on it: your courses, your work shifts, or clubs you are attending. Then, as the year goes by, add all your deadlines for various homework and essays (or applications dates for our Clyde & Co Vacation Scheme!). Give yourself reminders way ahead of time to aim to complete your homework in advance. This way you won’t always feel like you are running behind the clock. This method is also beneficial to give yourself time to anticipate any unforeseen event (do you remember this time you had a fever on your last free Sunday to write your essay?). This wiggle room is also good to consult your lecturer one last time before you submit your essay if necessary.

Mapping out your commitments this way will help you keep track of how much time you allocate per subject and give yourself clear achievable goals.

When it comes to exam season, you can use a colour coded timetable to even out the time you offer to each revision block per module. Furthermore, to keep your attention up when revising, it is advised to mix and match the subjects you oversee over a single day.

Finally, setting aside time for yourself is as important as reserving time for studying. You need to have time to exercise, have regular and healthy meals, and to meet with your family and friends. Adding these to your calendar, along with important dates (ie. birthdays, family gatherings…) will help you have a full view of your actual workload and responsibilities. This way, you will see whether you can realistically juggle all the different parts of your life, or if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Scaling back temporarily on some activities will then become possible to free yourself some time. Have a frank conversation in advance with your work manager to adapt to an uptick in homework by reducing your hours. Being able to discuss this with plenty of notice will ensure you will be kept in their good favour. Similarly, it can also give you time to reach out to your university for support.

All of this will help you keep your spirits up which plays a fundamental role in staying motivated. You will work better and be more productive if you are feeling positive.

Step 2: Past papers are you best friend

An aspect of time management that often flies under the radar of students is taking an exam. Think about it: wouldn’t it be extremely frustrating to have studied consistently over the year, made the best of all your flash cards, only to end up not having the time to finish writing your essay on time?

It is true that you will have had your fair share of essays and homework to write at home, the key difference being that for those you don’t have a rigid time window to produce an adequate and structured answer. This is where past papers come in handy.

Past papers are invaluable tools for students to assess the real level of knowledge excepted at an exam. To make the most of them, you will need to take them in real life conditions: make sure you complete them in the ordinary time window, set your phone on focus mode, and let your family/roommates know not to come knock at your door in the next three hours.

Thanks to this experience, you will be able to understand your weaknesses – the points you need to work harder on – but also reassure yourself on the parts you already master. Ask a lecturer for advice and opinion on your work.

To have your hand on past papers will also help you understand what type of questions are asked, or how are they phrased: in other words, what will be expected of you.

Furthermore, this will also increase your confidence level for the actual day of your exam as it will limit the “surprise” element of your day. It will help you realize what “three hours” means when it comes to think through an answer and write some elements on a draft before you pen it.

While we are on the topic of drafts, a good rule of thumb on how to manage them to not lose too much time would be: only write titles, subtitles and stick to bullet points for your core content. However, writing a full introduction and a conclusion on draft is useful to ensure consistency in the core of your essay.

Managing your exam time window is primordial to submit an exam or an essay that will be consistent from end to end, and not have a drop of quality because you had to rush the end.

Being able to provide a quality answer against the clock is as important as having the knowledge to write your answer in the first place.

To sum up

In conclusion, mastering time management and maintaining consistent effort are crucial for achieving excellent results in exams. By effectively organizing your study schedule and dedicating regular time to your studies, you can reduce stress and improve your performance. Remember, success is not just about working hard, but also about working smart. Consistency in your efforts ensures that you build and retain knowledge over time, leading to better outcomes. So, start planning, stay committed, and watch your hard work pay off in your exams!

“Hello! I am part of two practice groups, insurance law and disputes where I assist clients in liability matters as well as in various insurance sectors with both general advice and handling litigious matters.

To be honest, when I first began studying law, I didn't see myself practicing insurance law. Like many others I have spoken with, this choice of practice was rather a happy coincidence than design. I first came into contact with this practice area when I took the position as a student assistant in 2014. At the time, I had no prior knowledge of insurance law but it quickly grew on me. I was drawn to the way questions often come down to the parties’ agreements and the interpretation of the law. In addition, I have always been passionate about dispute resolution and litigation – I enjoy practicing law in its purest form and getting to apply what I learned while studying. Both insurance law and disputes are very versatile, exposing me to a wide range of legal issues. After all, nearly anything can be insured and just as many things can lead to disputes.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is being part of such a kind and supportive team. When Clyde & Co opened its first office in Germany (Dusseldorf), the team was just a small group. As I transferred alongside the team, I have been there from the very first minute of Clyde in Germany. Hence, not only did I have the unique opportunity to experience the establishment of our practice in Germany first hand, but I even got to be a part of such a success story.

A career highlight: In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a stage of my legal clerkship at our Sydney office. I was there from December 2019 to February 2020 and returned home just before Covid hit Germany. My experiences in the Sydney office were unforgettable and I will always cherish this opportunity. I learned about Australian law while discovering the country. At Clyde & Co, we are lucky to generally experience a welcoming and supportive work atmosphere across offices which made my time in Sydney truly special. After all, how often do you get the chance to live and work on the other side of the world for three whole months?

In my spare time, I love staying active. I play league volleyball, with matches on the weekends, and I completed a few (short distance) triathlons. I am also currently training to swim in a relay Ironman this year – and I know that the next challenge will follow soon!”

“Hello everyone! I’m a Senior Associate in Clyde & Co's Madrid office. I'm part of the Aviation, Marine and Insurance teams, focusing on litigation, arbitration, and regulatory matters.

I joined Clyde & Co because it's the most prestigious international insurance and transport law firm in Spain. I clearly remember the moment, seven years ago, when a member of the Marine Masters program I was attending took us out of class and announced that a vacancy had opened up at a law firm. They asked who wanted to be a real lawyer, and I remember answering, 'I do, but only if it's a firm like Clyde & Co,' and BINGO!

As well as the opportunity of being part of a fantastic firm, what I value most about Clyde & Co are the people who make it up and the fact that I feel 100% committed to my team. When I joined the team, it was five of us, today we're a team of 18. It has been wonderful being a part and a witness of the growth!

Based on my experience, I believe that the most important aspect of being part of a firm such as Clyde & Co is attitude. Specifically, having a high capacity for overcoming challenges and being an empathetic person, so that in addition to providing excellent and timely service, you're able to build trust with your clients and your team members. In my opinion I'd say that´s the key to professional success.”

The internet is written in permanent ink

Anything you post online can be shared, saved, or stored indefinitely.

Assume anything you post is here to stay: even with disappearing messages or on private group chats.

Google yourself to see how visible you are online

Assess your online footprint.

Delete or update inaccurate information.

Find old accounts or posts you have forgotten.

Takeaway: remember to pause before you post

Filter your socials

Make your socials private

Limit exposure.

Protect your personal data.

Stay in control of who interacts with your content.

Don’t post anything you wouldn’t be comfortable with your employer seeing

Ask yourself: “Would I be okay with this being shown in a meeting room or at a job interview?”

Avoid writing anything that could be taken out of context.

Check your friends’ activities: Have a conversation with them about being mindful of what they post of you

They may post pictures of you that don’t align with your professional image.

Ask them to check with you before they tag you in photos or posts.

Build your brand

Create a LinkedIn account to network and to put forward your professional accomplishments

Having an online identity is still very important.

LinkedIn is the perfect tool to control your narrative and what comes up first in search engines when people look up your name.

Read our other blog article on “5 Minute Guide to Kickstart your LinkedIn Journey” to learn more about how to make the most of it.

If you have an old social media account, go back on old posts and check whether they need deleting or delete your old accounts altogether

Employers or schools could find these accounts during background checks.

Old posts might not reflect your current views.

Inactive accounts can be targets for hacking or impersonations.

Pay attention to what you comment on your friends or colleagues’ posts: these comments can still be read by others

Be mindful of tone as sarcasm does not always translate well online.

Message privately instead of commenting publicly.

If in doubt: abstain.

Before the scheme

Research the specific office you will be attending

While you would have already researched the firm as a whole to secure your spot in the Vacation Scheme, different locations of the same firm can host different departments.

Read about their latest deals

You may also learn about the work of specific partners as you do research. Use this moment to write down any questions you may have for them, when given the opportunity.

Keep abreast of the news

Solicitors need to stay up to date with what is going on in the world and updates in legislation. Start getting in the habit of reading quality news publications, subscribe to a newsletter or attend webinars.

During the scheme

If in doubt, it is always better to dress up than down

Only wear clothes you would be comfortable wearing at a job interview.

Speaking of comfortable... a lot of walking might be involved, so please keep this in mind as you choose your shoes for the day.

Stay professional in any situation

This includes after work socials.

It could also be good to keep your agenda clear for potential gatherings after work hours.

Embrace the scheme

Take any opportunity to ask questions and to take on work.

Keep a journal: you will meet lots of people, and do a variety of tasks, that it might be easy to forget. Try to write a summary of the day each evening after work.

Final tips

Re-read your journal ahead of your exit interview at the end of your Vacation Scheme

The only difference between your entry and exit interview is that you now have the opportunity to enrich your answers with your newly gained experience.

Use your notes to reflect on what you did, and what did you well.

Network

While it is obvious to network with your team, it might be that you are very interested in a department you have not been assigned to. Ask your mentor for the opportunity to be introduced to a colleague of another department of interest, so you can ask your questions and learn more about it.

Treat everyone with respect

Everyone you will meet contributes in different ways to the good functioning of the firm. It should go without saying, but treat everyone with the same kindness and utmost respect.

Hear from Darren, a second year Trainee Solicitor in one of our UK offices. He tells us what inspired him to choose law.

As I am now in the fourth and final seat of my training contract, I am going through our firm’s internal qualification process and I have taken some time to reflect on my journey to law, and what inspired my career choices to date.

I am currently sat in our firms Aviation Liability department, and while this is a large practice area for Clyde & Co, aviation law is only serviced by a handful of firms in the wider legal industry. Aviation has been one of the teams I have wanted to do a seat in since accepting my training contract offer, however, after recent reflection, my journey to my fourth seat seems to have started long before applying to Clyde & Co.

My mum, cabin crew for Virgin Atlantic, recently landed back from Johannesburg and on landing day she celebrated 28 years with the airline, having joined the business back in 1997. She even managed to dig out a photo of her first flight of us after maternity leave!

This really made me reflect on my journey to and interest in law, aviation and the wider transport sector. Through my mum’s position with the airline, I have been travelling long before I can remember, and I have fond memories of spending time with my mum in the gallies of the old A340-600’s and 747-400’s!

At 13, I joined my local RAF Air Cadet squadron and stayed until I aged out at 20 (at which point you have to become a staff member), having made the penultimate rank of Cadet Flight Sergeant. My passion for the cadets was likely spurred on by aviation experience with my mum, and the cadets allowed me to deepen my interest – I was able to undertake flying lessons, gliding and a flight in a chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham as well as gaining a BTEC in Aviation Studies.

Throughout my time in the RAF Air Cadets, I continued accompanying my mum on work trips alongside finishing my A-levels and starting my law degree. It was during this time that I began pursuing my career in law. I knew that I wanted to apply to firms that had strong transport sectors, as I wanted to trial seats in these departments to see if my aviation / transport interests aligned with legal work.

Through that process, I landed my training contract with Clyde & Co, a firm founded in the maritime industry, and one with a market leading aviation practice. I have been able to undertake a seat in our EMNR (Energy, Marine and Natural Resources) practice group, as well as currently sitting in our Aviation Liability team.

While the qualification process is still ongoing, this period of reflection has really emphasised the importance to me of ensuring that my interests and passions were central to my career path and in finding a law firm that aligned with the same. This is always the core piece of advice I give to prospective Clyde & Co applications / law students – make sure you find your fit and know why you want to apply to X firm and align with their practices and values.

She has extensive graduate recruitment and teaching experience. Read on to learn from her 5 Minutes Guide to Kickstart your LinkedIn Journey.

LinkedIn has emerged as a powerful tool for professionals seeking to advance their careers, connect with industry peers, and showcase their expertise. Even if you’re just starting out, mastering LinkedIn can significantly enhance your professional journey. This article will guide you through the essential steps to make the most of LinkedIn, focusing on two key areas: completing your profile and building your network.

Complete your profile

Your LinkedIn profile is more than just a digital resume; it's your professional brand. In this section, we will explore how to craft a compelling profile that highlights your skills, experiences, and achievements. From choosing the right profile picture to writing a captivating summary, we will cover all the elements that make your profile stand out.

Step 1: Your headshot

To start with, let’s make sure you are using a professional looking headshot for your profile picture. We usually recommend wearing formal clothing, with no logo on, something that you would feel comfortable wearing at a job interview. The great picture you took on your summer trip last year should not appear as your avatar, no matter how good the picture is!

Just like any ID picture, we recommend asking one of your friends to take a close up shot of you rather than using a selfie – featuring yourself head to shoulders is usually the norm. Stay clear of filters and use a plain background. White is preferable but anything from light grey to beige or even pastel pink can work. If you are confident, you can make yourself pop out a little by contrasting the colour of your clothes to the colour of your background. Nonetheless we recommend to not let that be a distraction from what should be the focus of the image: you.

It is of course good to smile, and to be relaxed in your picture.

Step 2: Your work experience

List your work experience. What is LinkedIn if not a resume bank.
For each experience, before writing your bullet points, write a short description – a couple of lines maximum – to make reading through your experience easier.

You will need to state your role in this work experience (ie. Vacation Scheme), what type of company it is (ie. English City Law Firm), how many people were selected if applicable, and what was your responsibility (ie. Shadowing solicitors and attending talks). This will make it easy for anyone wanting to read your resume at a quick glance to understand what you were doing and where.

“In this role, I had the privilege to be selected for a Vacation Scheme at Clyde & Co London along with X other students. I observed and shadowed solicitors of this esteemed English City law firm for two weeks.”

Under this summary, list bullet points to give a more detailed description of your work experience. Using action verbs for each point will make your resume more impactful. Try to also bring a level of detail to enhance your resume (how many people were in your team? Was it done in autonomy? Do you have numbers to provide?). Look at these examples below and see how they compare:

“I helped pupils with my colleague in the canteen hall during their lunch break.”

OR

“Supervised lunch time of over 60 pupils in a kindergarten along with one junior colleague.”

While it is obvious to write about work placements or internships, you may be pondering whether you should add these part-time student jobs you held to your virtual resume. The answer to this question is always yes. At this stage of your budding career, this will help you populate your LinkedIn profile. It will also show that you are hardworking, resilient and able to manage both your studies and a job. Make sure you frame your description in a way that highlights the transferable skills you acquired in this experience to your target job.

Step 3: Finish your profile

Fill out your education section thoroughly. Enter your graduation year, your expected degree classification, and list a few relevant modules.

If you have any volunteering experience, sport achievements, if you are a part of a university society or presiding one: add it too, as it helps to create a more complete picture of yourself.

In addition, don’t forget to complete the “About” section at the top to introduce yourself and what job you are aiming for. Make it concise and impactful.

Build a network

Building a robust network on LinkedIn is essential for amplifying your personal brand and unlocking new opportunities. In this section, we will delve into effective strategies for expanding your LinkedIn network. By the end, you'll be equipped with the tools to cultivate a diverse and influential network that supports your professional growth.

Step 1: Identifying professionals you can add to your network

Once your profile is ready to go, you will probably sit facing the LinkedIn search toolbar at the top left of your page wondering who you could possibly add to your network.

To start easily, you can enter the name of your classmates who will also be at the start of their own LinkedIn journey. You may think now that just like you, your classmates are not professionals yet so there is little added value to add them to your network. However, you need to remember that today’s classmates are tomorrow’s professionals and that you might even end up working in the same field as them if you are undertaking the same studies. You might find one of your former classmates become one of your colleagues in your future firm one day. Networking starts today on your university bench.

Secondly, use university fairs to connect with people you meet there. Whether it is professionals you meet behind the stands (solicitors or HR alike), or other students. While you are at the fair, do not hesitate to ask for permission to connect: professionals attending these fairs will expect it.

Last but not least, play with the filters on the LinkedIn search tool to target someone who works for a firm you are aiming for.

To make the search tool filters appear, start by entering something in the search box at the top of your home feed, like the firm you are aiming for (ie. Clyde & Co). Once your search is launched, you will have more filters appearing at the top. They offer you the possibility to look for anything from people to desired location or what position the person you are looking for occupies.

While we understand that it can be tempting, don’t overdo it and add too many people from the same company. Furthermore, if you are adding one or two people you don’t know from a firm, it needs to make sense. You need to have a reason for it.

For example, it might be that you would like to have a better understanding of the day to day of a trainee or of a junior solicitor in a specific firm. Having a short conversation with one of them could help you consolidate your career choice and further your understanding of the role you target or the culture at their firm.

It sometimes helps as well to add someone you have a connection with at some level: it could be an alumnus from your university, or someone who attends the same swimming club as you. This could help you in the next stage which would be sending them an invitation to connect.

Step 2: What message to write as you connect

When connecting with anyone but especially with someone you don’t know, like in any other life situation, politeness is key. Make use of the 200 characters to send a concise introduction of yourself and why you would like to connect. This will maximise the chances of your request being accepted. Bear in mind that not everyone checks their LinkedIn regularly and that no one is obliged to accept your invitation. Professionals often receive dozens or more invitations on a regular basis.

Ok, now you have made it. You have completed your profile, targeted a professional in the firm you aim to work for, and they have accepted your invitation to connect. It is now time to invite them for a virtual meeting, which means you will have to craft them a direct message.

To respect correct etiquette, you should start your message by thanking your connection for accepting your request. The rest of your message should contain a brief introduction of yourself, the reason for your invitation to connect (i.e. Where they work/ what they do), suggesting a virtual meeting, and if you have something in common, now is the moment to mention it. Offering a short time window for the virtual meeting could help someone accept to add you to their already busy schedule, 15 minutes is ideal.

“Hi X, many thanks for accepting my invitation. I am a 2nd year law student at X and I am very interested in starting a career at Clyde & Co. I saw that you were undertaking your training contract there and wanted to ask you a few questions about it if you had 10-15’ for a virtual meeting. I also saw that we are both alumni of the same swim club and thought it would be interesting to connect. Thank you for taking the time, Your Name”.

Once you have set up a date with your connection, it is now time to prepare for your meeting.

Step 3: Prepare for your virtual meeting

Meeting with someone from the firm you would like to target or who works in a position you dream of is an invaluable chance to gather knowledge you would not have access to otherwise.

Your aim will be to make the most of your experience by not asking them questions you can easily find online. It will both show your seriousness and that you respect your connection’s time.

This means that ahead of your meeting, you want to thoroughly research the firm, and the job you would like. Researching the competition is also an asset, as having a comparison point is a great way to speak more specifically about one company, as you understand how they stand out.

In short, use this meeting opportunity to bridge the gap in knowledge you may still have after your research or to validate your understanding.

Asking questions about the day to day of the job or the culture of the firm could also be interesting to you as these are difficult bits of information to find online. Although, it is always good to bear in mind that each employee’s experience is individual and that the type of work can widely vary from one department to another.

Besides, it is paramount you respect the pre-agreed meeting time by keeping an eye on the clock unless actively invited otherwise. Similarly, be mindful of time while selecting the questions you would like to ask. You might want to write your questions in order of priority, so if time runs out you do not have to skip the most important ones to you.

Finally, make sure to tailor your questions to the person you are meeting. For example, a solicitor won’t be able to tell you much about the specifics of the recruitment process, this would be a question for a HR recruiter.

To sum up

In conclusion, leveraging LinkedIn to build a professional network is a strategic move that can significantly enhance your career prospects. Remember, the key to successful networking on LinkedIn is consistency and authenticity. Regularly update your profile, reach out to new contacts, and nurture existing relationships. With dedication and the right approach, LinkedIn can be a powerful tool to expand your professional horizons and open up new opportunities.

I joined as a Business Development Manager in 2021, supporting our PI, Healthcare, and Cyber teams in insurance. After briefly exploring another opportunity, I quickly realised that Clyde & Co was the right place for me. Within five months, I returned and began supporting additional business lines within insurance, further expanding my experience and contributions to the firm. Upon my return, I covered the maternity leave of a Senior Manager, which allowed me to take on new responsibilities and reach the next level in my career. In September 2025, I transitioned to a new role and was promoted to Senior Client Development Manager, where I now support our Multinational Corporation Programme.

My day-to-day is much like piecing a puzzle together—seeking a holistic view of our global relationships and finding the white space where we can maximise our impact. I utilise various tools to do this; including analysing our in-house data, researching market data, alongside traditional BD and marketing tactics such as events, campaigns and pitches. Above all, my daily focus is about building and maintaining strong relationships, both internally and externally so that we all work towards a common goal.

Clyde & Co gives me the freedom to deliver results in my own unique way. I’m encouraged to be bold, think creatively, and, most recently, have been given the opportunity to engage directly with clients. Additionally, as a working mum, I greatly appreciate the flexibility offered here, which allows me to excel in my career while also being a present parent—a value that is truly celebrated at Clyde & Co.

Being Neurodivergent means that I have to put extra energy into communicating effectively with people and extra effort into socialising / networking with peers. I can struggle with the lights and sound in the office, or the intensity of the commute via public transport; all due to sensory sensitivities. This means I get home from work or social events exhausted and need extra time to recharge.

Before I was diagnosed at the age of 27, my family and friends thought it was just my quirky personality rather than a specific condition. However, researching into what I was experiencing led to a diagnosis that also prompted my dad and wider family to seek their own diagnoses due to the genetic links. It changed our lives completely.

Being Neurodivergent makes me different in a positive way. I would say I have a gift for deeply empathising with people and animals, and I also have the gift of reading people based on my pattern recognition skills which helps me to navigate work and wider society. I’ve learned to embrace my uniqueness and use it to my advantage."

"At 26, after obtaining 12 GCSEs, 4 A-Levels, and both an undergraduate and master's degree in law, I was diagnosed with ADHD.

The relief I felt upon receiving this diagnosis was immense; it was as if my entire life suddenly made sense. I was no longer a failure who struggled with basic everyday tasks, like I had told myself for many years.

I just had a brain that worked in a slightly different way and understanding this was the most powerful thing anyone could have given me.

Throughout my education, I always struggled. Despite being intelligent and achieving good grades, I constantly felt like I was falling short of my full potential. Coursework was a challenge for many years, and I thrived under the intense pressure of exams to succeed.

However, it wasn't until I finished university, began my legal career, and moved out of my family home that I truly began to experience the struggles associated with ADHD, which at the time I knew absolutely nothing about.

At the time I was working in a claimant law firm, grappling with an unmanageable caseload, demanding targets and even more demanding clients. All whilst a global pandemic was unravelling.

COVID-19 took away all sources of dopamine – we couldn’t leave the house, see our friends and family or escape to the gym (or anywhere for that matter). For someone with ADHD, it was a nightmare. For someone with undiagnosed ADHD, it was a daily challenge.

As the pandemic passed, my struggles continued not only in the workplace but at home also. I struggled keeping everything organised at home, being on time for appointments and meetings with friends, finding the motivation to stay focused.

I worked at three different law firms before joining Clyde & Co, generally staying for a year or a year and a half before becoming bored or burnt out due to the demands of the role and lack of support.

Seven months before joining Clyde and Co, I stumbled upon a video online about ADHD in women. Suddenly everything clicked. Everything I was experiencing, all in one video:

Rejection Sensitivity

Emotional regulation

Disorganization

Procrastination

Impulsivity

The list goes on.

I spoke with my GP who referred me to Psychiatry UK via the Right to Choose. I had an exhausting 10 month wait before I received my diagnosis, which was relatively quick compared to the NHS wait time of up to 7 years in Manchester.

At this point I had been working at Clyde & Co for 3 months.

Getting the job at Clyde & Co felt different. It’s a company I have always wanted to work at and had applied to a few times in the past – this was third time lucky. I wanted this experience to be different from all my previous ones in the legal industry.

Reluctantly, after only three months I disclosed my ADHD diagnosis with a colleague in HR.

Since this day I have received nothing but support, encouragement and understanding from Clyde & Co.

I have received equipment that has helps me stay focused and engaged throughout my working day along with a 1-2-1 workplace coach to help me focus on issues I face in the workplace and how I can work with my ADHD to overcome these issues.

Initially I was extremely reluctant to disclose my ADHD. It was new and unknown to me and I didn’t feel ready to share this with others. To some extent I felt shame. Like having ADHD meant I would never be successful and there would always be something holding me back from becoming a solicitor.

Now, almost a year and a half post-diagnosis, I feel completely different.

Understanding my ADHD and how my brain works has allowed me to understand myself in ways I never could before, and from this, I have thrived.

I no longer feel ashamed to say I have ADHD. It’s no longer a limitation holding me back.

The legal profession immensely benefits from neurodivergent minds. We often possess exceptional problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, analytical minds and greater levels of empathy and understanding – qualities crucial to the legal field.

Clyde & Co has created a safe environment for me to grow and thrive, and I strongly encourage anyone who feels they may be struggling to reach out to HR.

I am also a ‘friendly-face’ of the Enable network and my inbox is always open to anyone who would like to discuss anything in relation to the contents of this blog post.

As my journey as an aspiring solicitor continues, I have no doubts that Clyde & Co is the law firm that will help me achieve my goals. Their unwavering support and commitment to fostering an inclusive environment have made all the difference in my professional and personal growth."

Two weeks ago today (although admittedly a bit closer to 8am) I began my first day of the Clyde & Co summer vacation program at the firms Cape Town office. The program provided valuable insights into the day-to-day workings of a competitive and highly successful global law firm. I was given practical, working-world exposure to numerous areas of law, including maritime and shipping, medical negligence, commercial litigation and insurance law.

The week began with an orientation talk and breakfast with the firm, where we were given the opportunity to meet and introduce ourselves to members of the firm. We received an incredibly friendly and engaging welcome from the firm, and this would set the tone for our experience throughout the week. I am greatly appreciative of the time, interest and engagement that was shown to me and my fellow vacation students by every member of the Clyde & Co team.

The beginning of the week consisted primarily of practice group talks presented by directors, associates and CA's in their respective areas of practice within the firm. The talks provided a wealth of knowledge from experts at the forefront of their fields, and gave insight into the current dynamics and future trends of numerous legal sectors. We were also given CA toolkit discussions by Liyema Mandlake. These talks provided valuable advice on the primary skills required for a CA to adapt and thrive in the beginning stages of their career.

In the latter half of the week we worked primarily with our vac work 'buddies'; members of the firm assigned to us in the beginning of the week who provided tasks and feedback to us throughout the program. I was placed in the maritime and shipping department under Matthew Van Maasdyk. Despite a busy week and workload, Matt took the time to discuss complex concepts, terms and legal issues in a field of law I had no previous exposure to. Matt's passion and dedication to the work he does in maritime law is inspiring, and I'd like to extend my sincerest appreciation for the patience, help and insights he gave me throughout the week.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to Liyema Mandlake, who's tireless work ethic, professionalism, rigid organizational skills together with a great deal of friendliness, approachability and no small amount of humor ensured the program was a huge success.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been invited to take part in the Clyde & Co vac work program, and leave it feeling a great sense of passion, excitement and direction for my future career in law.
