Meet the team - Yesra-Cecile Hüls, Senior Associate

Yesra-Cecile Hüls is a Senior Associate in our Dusseldorf office. Today, she is sharing her story.

“Hello! I am part of two practice groups, insurance law and disputes where I assist clients in liability matters as well as in various insurance sectors with both general advice and handling litigious matters.

To be honest, when I first began studying law, I didn't see myself practicing insurance law. Like many others I have spoken with, this choice of practice was rather a happy coincidence than design. I first came into contact with this practice area when I took the position as a student assistant in 2014. At the time, I had no prior knowledge of insurance law but it quickly grew on me. I was drawn to the way questions often come down to the parties’ agreements and the interpretation of the law. In addition, I have always been passionate about dispute resolution and litigation – I enjoy practicing law in its purest form and getting to apply what I learned while studying. Both insurance law and disputes are very versatile, exposing me to a wide range of legal issues. After all, nearly anything can be insured and just as many things can lead to disputes.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is being part of such a kind and supportive team. When Clyde & Co opened its first office in Germany (Dusseldorf), the team was just a small group. As I transferred alongside the team, I have been there from the very first minute of Clyde in Germany. Hence, not only did I have the unique opportunity to experience the establishment of our practice in Germany first hand, but I even got to be a part of such a success story.

A career highlight: In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a stage of my legal clerkship at our Sydney office. I was there from December 2019 to February 2020 and returned home just before Covid hit Germany. My experiences in the Sydney office were unforgettable and I will always cherish this opportunity. I learned about Australian law while discovering the country. At Clyde & Co, we are lucky to generally experience a welcoming and supportive work atmosphere across offices which made my time in Sydney truly special. After all, how often do you get the chance to live and work on the other side of the world for three whole months?

In my spare time, I love staying active. I play league volleyball, with matches on the weekends, and I completed a few (short distance) triathlons. I am also currently training to swim in a relay Ironman this year – and I know that the next challenge will follow soon!”
