Josh Halliday joined us through our Summer Associate Program (2023), and is now an Associate. Today, he tells us about his experience.
What originally drew you to Clyde & Co for your summer experience, and what made you want to return full-time?
I had heard great things about the people and culture at Clyde & Co. Even the first emails to set up my interview were friendly and engaging! After spending an enjoyable summer at Clyde & Co it was obvious that what I had heard was true. Everyone at the firm was welcoming, supportive, and invested in my learning. Even as a summer associate, I got significant face time with the partners and felt a part of the team.
How did your relationships with lawyers during summer – mentors, partners, or peer – impact your decision to return?
I had worked in other firms prior to Clyde & Co where I did not have the opportunity to work with partners and senior staff very closely. It was refreshing to get to learn and work alongside partners, associates, paralegals and support on a variety of projects. All the staff are down to earth and approachable which made for an easy transition into the team.
Can you share a memorable moment or project from your summer that helped shape your interest in a specific practice area or solidified your career path?
I was hoping to get more experience with litigation throughout the summer. I was lucky enough to attend multiple hearings, depositions, and mediations which solidified my interest in this area.
What was the most rewarding or unexpected part of your summer experience at Clyde & Co?
I came in as a summer associate with minimal experience with insurance law. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learnt about insurance law over the summer as well as how my interest and passion in the area grew. The most rewarding part was of course being given the opportunity to return full time after graduation.
How did the summer program prepare you for your transition into practice as a first-year associate?
Through my time over the summer, I developed strong relationships with multiple partners and associates which I have been able to build on throughout my time as an attorney. Of course, I also gained practical knowledge through learning about the insurance industry and work product expectations at the firm.
How has Clyde & Co supported your growth since joining—whether through mentorship, learning opportunities, or career progression?
Clyde & Co is deeply invested in Associate development. From the start, my mentor Jimmy Moffitt has been supportive, knowledgeable, and accessible whether I need help with a case or want to share my success. I have also been fortunate to work on multiple cases with different teams - learning from multiple well respected attorneys has been invaluable in my first year out of law school.
What do you enjoy most about working at Clyde & Co today?
I enjoy the collaborative environment at Clyde & Co. As a new associate, getting real time feedback and recognition from more experienced lawyers has been helpful for my development. The firm is understanding of a work/life balance which contributes to the positive culture overall.
What would you tell a law student considering a summer at Clyde & Co?
Apply! I would highly recommend the experience! Even if someone is unsure about insurance law, Clyde & Co is a great firm and a great place to learn.
