What motivated you to apply with our firm, and how did the experience align with your expectations?
From a broader perspective, one of the main reasons I applied to Clyde & Co was its reputation as a highly respected global law firm with a strong focus on insurance. With over 60 offices and associated locations across six continents, the firm's international presence was particularly appealing to me. During law school, I excelled in insurance law, contract law, and obligations under the Civil Code of Quebec, which solidified my desire to pursue a career in insurance law. Clyde & Co was the unique opportunity not only to work in this specialized field but also to broaden my horizons by practicing in different jurisdictions and experiencing diverse work environments. Even though I have not yet had the chance to work in one of the firm’s offices around the world, I am confident that this possibility remains open, and it reinforces my belief in the firm’s commitment to fostering professional growth and offering global opportunities. This combination of professional development and cultural exposure was deeply important to me and perfectly aligned with my career aspirations.
On a more personal level, one of the most significant reasons I chose Clyde & Co was my lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer in an environment that values authenticity and humanity. Coming from a diverse background, it was essential for me to work at a firm that champions diversity and recognizes the immense value brought by different cultures, experiences, and perspectives. I wanted to be part of a workplace where I could be my authentic self, fully embraced and appreciated by my colleagues.
From the very beginning, during networking events and throughout the recruitment process, I was struck by the openness, kindness, and genuine nature of everyone I interacted with at Clyde & Co. These were individuals who not only welcomed me with open hearts but also took a sincere interest in my personal journey and the efforts I’ve made to reach this point in my career. They saw me as more than just a candidate with strong grades and legal experience, they valued me as a person.
This human connection, which I experienced consistently from my initial interactions with Clyde & Co employees to this day, was a pivotal factor in my decision to join the firm. It is this combination of professional excellence and genuine humanity that makes me proud to be part of the Clyde & Co team.
How would you describe the support and mentorship you received from colleagues and supervisors during your time here?
The support and mentorship I received from colleagues and supervisors during my time at the firm were exceptional. From the very beginning, my colleagues, including other law students, were incredibly welcoming and present to help me adjust. I joined the summer student program a few weeks later than others, and I remember how they went out of their way to assist me. They patiently explained how the systems worked, answered my questions with kindness and enthusiasm, and shared everything they had learned, even though they themselves were relatively new. Their willingness to support me created an environment of collaboration and camaraderie.
Regarding the support from supervisors, I owe much of what I know and have learned to Me Valérie de Grandpré Chapdelaine. I first connected with her around two years ago, after being hired following the Course aux stages. Even before my summer student period began, Valérie was incredibly supportive. She would regularly check in on me, encourage me during the challenges of preparing for the bar exams, and offer guidance, despite not having met me in person yet. By the time I started my summer position, I already felt a strong connection with her and meeting her in person only reinforced the respect and trust I had developed.
Since then, Valérie has remained a constant source of mentorship and guidance. She is always approachable, greeting students, stagiaires, and colleagues with warmth and kindness, and she makes time to answer questions and provide support. Her dedication to teaching and ensuring our success at the firm has been invaluable. Knowing I could rely on her mentorship and guidance has given me a sense of security and confidence in navigating the challenges of my role.
In addition to Valérie, the broader firm culture has been equally supportive. Everyone I interacted with, from senior lawyers to administrative staff, took the time to guide me, answer my questions, and help me grow into the best version of myself as a young juriste. This collective mentorship and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping my experience and professional development
Can you share a memorable moment or highlight from your time as a Summer Law Student or Articling Student at our firm?
I have multiple memorable moments from my time as a summer student at Clyde & Co, but one that stands out was an activity organized by Valérie, a team outing to an escape room. The challenge required us to collaborate as colleagues to solve puzzles and find a way out of the room before the "mafia" arrived. This experience was both memorable and entertaining because it brought us closer together as a team and highlighted the importance of working collectively toward a shared goal.
The activity mirrored the collaborative approach we adopt in the firm, where teamwork is essential for our professional growth and success. Following the escape room, we enjoyed lunch together at an excellent restaurant, which further reinforced the sense of camaraderie and connection among us. This day not only provided an opportunity to bond with my colleagues but also taught me valuable lessons about teamwork and mutual support, making it a highlight of my summer experience.
