Daniel Ruderman joined us through our Summer Associate Program (2024). Today, he tells us about his experience.
What originally drew you to Clyde & Co for your summer experience, and what made you want to return full-time?
Clyde & Co’s global presence and reputation for handling complex disputes stood out. The people made me want to return full-time—the mix of deep expertise and friendly mentorship make it an ideal firm for a starting associate to thrive.
How did your relationships with lawyers during summer – mentors, partners, or peer – impact your decision to return?
Every conversation, whether with a partner or associate, felt fun and welcoming. The willingness to teach and share industry insights made an impression.
Can you share a memorable moment or project from your summer that helped shape your interest in a specific practice area or solidified your career path?
Attending a live deposition was a highlight. Seeing skilled attorneys think on their feet showed me how dynamic litigation work really is, and also how intriguing shipping industry cases can be.
What was the most rewarding or unexpected part of your summer experience at Clyde & Co?
How much trust and responsibility summer associates were given right away. I expected observation but got substantive work helping research case law for motions, drafting client letters, and preparing for depositions.
How did the summer program prepare you for your transition into practice as a first-year associate?
The summer program gave me a realistic, hands-on look at day-to-day firm practice. From charting the facts of a new, complex matter, to drafting under pressure, every task was preparation for adding value as a junior team member.
How has Clyde & Co supported your growth since joining—whether through mentorship, learning opportunities, or career progression?
Clyde & Co offers a nice balance of hands-on experience and structured learning. Alongside mentorship with associates and extensive interaction with partners, the firm provides educational sessions that focus on key areas of law, helping the entire North America summer associate cohort grow together.
What would you tell a law student considering a summer at Clyde & Co?
Say yes. You will learn by doing and be part of a team that treats you like a future colleague, not a summer intern. And the cases are fascinating too!
